Why is compensation determined in SDR and what is SDR?

SDR is a currency tool which is founded on the U.S. dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen, Pound Sterling and Chinese Renminbi (October 2016). It serves as currency in international transactions.

It is possible to convert SDRs into your own currency in order to assess the amount of the damages you suffered.

You can find out the value of SDRs at the time of the incident here.

So effectively, in the case of a luggage claim, the liability cap set at 1131 SDR per passenger under the Montreal Convention equates to approximately 1346 in euros. This means that you may not claim a compensation higher that 1346 euros if your luggage is lost, delayed or damaged.
