Air France strikes from Saturday, June 11th to Tuesday, June 14th : what are your rights in case of a cancelled or delayed flight?

Air France pilots' unions released last week a strike notice. The strike will start on Saturday, June 11th 2016 and end on Tuesday, June 14th, midnight.

Air France's flights schedules will be significantly disrupted during this period.

What are the consequences for Air France’s passengers?

Since many Air France’s pilots will go on strike, Air France will have to cancel some of its flights.

According to a French law, namely “Loi Diard”, employees who plan on being on strike must inform their employer at least 48 hours before the strike begins.

Consequently, Air France will only be able to determine how many pilots will go on strike on June 9th. It is only from this date that Air France will be able to inform its passengers whether or not their flights is cancelled. Besides, delays are likely to occur for flights that are maintained.

Cancelled flight: what can I do?

If your flight is cancelled, the European Regulation 261/2004 entitles you to:

  • choose between a ticket refund or a rerouting flight at your final destination;
  • financial compensation, ranging from 197£ to 470£ depending on the flight distance; and
  • a right to care (food, drinks, hotel).

Is the strike an extraordinary circumstance?

No. Air France pilots' strike is an internal strike. Therefore, the company cannot lawfully refuse to pay passengers the above-mentioned fixed compensation provided by EU regulation.
